KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Q. What's more amazing than handing someone the first computer they have ever seen?

A. Seeing how quickly they understand it and realise the potential it has to change their life. In April, the two of us of us were privileged to be part of the very first pilot project for P3 ( www.p3international.org ) in Soppeng, Indonesia. It truly was amazing so we've put together a special photo journey on our website, with captions and story at http://www.matt-ad.com/photos.htm

SEWING IN KAZAKHSTAN
________________________

Their homes are dirt mounds rising out of scorched surroundings. They've moulded the mud bricks with their own hands mixing earth and water that they carried from a distance. This is Kazakhstan, in a refugee village where the average income is US$1 a day. In June, Matt took a trip to Central Asia with some other members of the Crossroads team. As part of the trip, they visited this village and met some amazing groups at work.

One project they saw in the area is a sewing club for women. With one foot powered machine and many willing hands, these refugee women sew bags and other small items for sale. The group had asked for sewing machines from Crossroads some months ago. We passed on the request to some school children here in Hong Kong who raised the money and bought brand new machines. Our own staff had the privilege of delivering those machines.

There were some examples of incredible timing on this trip. Just before the sewing machines arrived, the local prison had been in contact with this refugee sewing group, asking if they could make 3,000 uniforms for the inmates and become the ongoing supplier. The sewing group was able to take the assignment with confidence, knowing that the machines that they needed to complete the job were on their way in our container from Hong Kong! The extra income that will come in from this assignment will be channelled into the collective development fund of the village whose next target is a road for the village.

You can see some photos of the sewing centre and the women using them here: www.matt-ad.com/photos.htm

VISITORS FROM AFAR
________________________

Since we last wrote, we've had numerous people come to see us! - Mike Dotch swung through on his way to visiting 25 countries in a year - Kathryn Atwood from Sydney came to stay for a week while Matt was away in Kazakhstan - yay! and last but certainly not least... - Ads parents John and Louise visited Hong Kong on their way back from Europe in June. It was fantastic to show them around our home and where we work, and to really spend some quality time together.

Love, Matt & Ad
