Trust me... on the Sunscreen

23rd June, 2002

Hi Everybody,

Did we ever tell you the story about the sunscreen? It happened a few weeks ago but it's such a great one that we'll tell it anyway. As you'll remember, three teenaged guys from a family close to Crossroads have been planning for a while to do a charity bike ride across Australia, raising money for Crossroads and another group, Future Hope India. Well, they have started this odyssey and they're currently travelling through the Nullabor on the main road, pedalling away and no doubt seeing all kinds of interesting native roadkill. Cast your minds back a few weeks to the time just before the guys were about to leave. There were all kinds of equipment they needed to get together and naturally, we wanted to help out. Brendan emailed through a wish list detailing the things they had to find, like fluorescent safety fabric, special bike pedals and other accessories. By and large between the various departments in the warehouse, we had the things they wanted. There were a couple of things, however, which were left unticked - one of them was the request for a large quantity of sunscreen to ward off those evil Aussie rays. Unfortunately, much as Helen (our lovely processing rooms co-ordinator) wanted to oblige, sunscreen is definitely not something that is donated on a regular basis! However, there's a bit of a saying around here along the lines of 'never say never'. Things have a habit of supernaturally turning up when you least expect them, or most need them. Sure enough, within 48 hours, an email message came through from the 'incoming goods' section saying, 'we've just received 8 large bottles of new sunscreen, does anybody need it??' He he he. Love it.

By the way, check the cycling itinerary on their website (www.crossroads.org.hk/cycling) to see when they hit your home town. They have already miraculously bumped into one ex-Crossroader in the middle of the desert (Greg Yates/GY), but that's another story!

Adelaide sat in on the latest 'big picture' shipping department meeting last week, always a welcome opportunity. Taking place every 2 months, this meeting is where the exciting things happen - new orders are activated and decisions are made about when to send the big containers shooting off round the world. It was especially exciting this week, when activating some new orders, to see about 5 new countries, including Jamaica and some African nations, added to the list of places in which Crossroads is involved. That's 5 new little marker flags to stick on the world map hanging in the back office!

We can't wait to hear more about these new shipments and we'll keep you posted as well.

Much love, Adelaide & Matt
