Update 22

Ironing linen for a Kazakhstan shipment

Dear All,

We're a bit behind with the update this week but it's only because we're having so much fun with Bea (Adelaide's sister). She came into the warehouse all last week and worked on various different things. For a few days she was helping Marie-Ange decorate a new room which has recently been set aside as a 'quiet room' where people can have time to work uninterrupted by phones and other distractions. Bea helped paint and fit out the room to look like a beautiful Chinese garden. We'll post some photos of her working on this. She also spent some time in the household department preparing some tablecloths and embroidered linen to go with other goods to a counselling home for women in Kazakhstan. We have some great photos of her ironing away.

But it hasn't been all work, we have had a great time doing Hong Kong activities like dining up the Peak (with a brilliant nighttime view of the city), going to Shenzhen (in China) and visiting the bird market in Kowloon. Speaking of which, you will all be pleased to know that we chose a replacement for our absconding finch, Charlie. The new bird is named Bailey and is settling in quite well. On the first night in his new house the other bird, Jade, wouldn't let him into the nest so he had to sleep on the floor :-( but fortunately she now seems to have forgotten about her old love and has welcomed in the new with open wings.

In Crossroads news, there will be a container loading this Thursday, which is always great. You may have read in the news lately about the terrible flooding in Western China during the past month. Torrential rains have caused extensive flooding through about 10 provinces and there are already 110 million people affected!! There are about 1.5 million people who have been evacuated or lost their homes and there have been reports of entire villages being washed completely away. The 40' container being packed on Thursday is destined for one of the areas worst affected by these floods. We will be sending clothes, shoes, umbrellas, toys, flashlights, backpacks and other things that people who have lost all their possessions will be most in need of.

Better go for now, till next week!
