Dear All,

Hands up who knows where Tajikistan is! Hmm...we didn't think so. Well, don't worry, it's one of those countries you don't hear much about, but which is nonetheless hugely in need of aid. It's a land-locked nation nestled in amongst the other 'stan's, bordering on Kazhakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan and has, for obvious reasons, absorbed a huge number of Afghan refugees. For an already struggling post-Soviet economy, the burden of thousands of refugees is immense. People around our warehouse have recently been preparing goods to send to one particular group in Tajikistan which distributes goods to people in need, with a focus on orphans and refugees.

Yesterday, while the two of us were sitting comfortably in our air conditioned offices, a bunch of other Crossroads volunteers were hauling and sweating out on the tarmac (remember, we work at an old airport), packing mattresses, desks, chairs, stationery supplies, bedding and other goods into a 20 foot container to be sent on its way to Tajikistan. Considering the over 30 degree heat and humidity, it was an amazing feat and we're always in awe of our container-packers!

Disaster struck the little Gow household this week - one of our birds escaped from his cage and flew off into the big wide world on his own. An anonymous person left the cage door open after changing their food, then put the cage on the balcony to give them some fresh air. We didn't notice that Charlie had absconded until we brought the cage back inside. Poor little Jade is hopping around despondently, wondering why he went out to get the milk and never came home. Finches actually do need to have at least one other for company so if Charlie doesn't return, we might have to go shopping at the bird market :-(

In other news, Adelaide's sister Bea is coming to visit for two weeks and we are very excited. Bea will be working for the two weeks in the warehouse with us, doing some as yet unspecified tasks, and we look forward to showing her around Hong Kong. Hopefully she'll remember to fill our order of minties, fantales and other Aussie treats...hint hint, Bea. Enough for now, thanks for the emails as usual!

Love,

Matt & Ad
